Union County Historical Village Opens Memorial Day Weekend
Step Back Into 1890s Iowa
The Union County Historical Village at McKinley Park opens for its 2025 summer season beginning Memorial Day weekend. The living history site — featuring 15 authentic 1890s buildings — welcomes visitors every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday through Labor Day weekend.
What Awaits Visitors
Walking into the Historical Village is like stepping directly into a rural Iowa community of the 1890s. Fifteen authentic structures have been preserved and restored, each interpreted to reflect life in Union County during that era:
- One-room schoolhouse
- Period-furnished family home
- General store
- Printing shop and blacksmith shop
- Country church
- Log cabin — one of the oldest in Union County
- Railroad depot and caboose
- 1896 barn with period agricultural equipment
- Museum building with rotating exhibits
Volunteer Interpreters
Volunteer interpreters bring the buildings to life throughout the season, sharing stories of the men, women, and children who shaped Union County's history.
